Basil Basil is most commonly used fresh in cooked recipes. In general, it is added at the last moment, as cooking can quickly destroy the flavor. The fresh herb can be kept for a short time in plastic bags in the refrigerator, or for a longer period in the freezer. Basil is commonly used in tomato sauce, pesto, meat seasoning, stuffing, soups, salads and vinegar. It can also chopped and sprinkled over fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and balsamic vinegar for a fresh caprese salad! Basil is anti-inflammatory, and an antioxidant.
